Recovery guides

After surgery: what's normal and when to call.

The full guide for your operation appears in your portal after surgery. Here are the key points.

Throat

After tonsillectomy

Pain often peaks around days 5–7. This is expected, so keep taking your pain relief on schedule.
Drink plenty of water and eat soft, cool foods. Avoid anything spicy or crunchy for two weeks.
Call straight away if you spit or cough up fresh blood.
Nose & sinus

After sinus or septum surgery

Start saline rinses the day after surgery and continue for as long as advised.
Don't blow your nose, lift anything heavy or bend over for 10 days.
Call if you have a fever, severe headache, swelling around the eye or steady bleeding.
Ear

After ear surgery

Keep the ear completely dry. Use a cotton ball with petroleum jelly when you bathe.
Sneeze with your mouth open, and don't fly until you're cleared to.
Call if you develop dizziness, facial weakness or worsening pain.
